Review on People Service.
Its hard to go out there and tell people that what you do are for people instead of yourself. This is especially true when the intention of an act is questionable and that the line between service and self-gain is thin.
When I say people, I mean people around us. Depending on the context, it can mean the software community as a whole, the nation or a community consisting of a considerable number of people. Who has the spirit to always thing about the people’s interest instead of oneself?
This is definitely nothing to do with one’s intelligence. It is the value built into oneself. Depending on how strong this value is rooted, it will also determines how hard or easy can it be change or broken. Like any value, the mindset of service to people can change. Let one day, something bad happen, when the people you loved, betrayed you. You could have all along been putting their interest a priority over yours, but when things happens, will you still hold the same believe.
Though the spirit of such service shouldn’t be moved easily, it can get difficult at times when the people you are working for, do things that upset you. It can be intentional or unintentional. Sometimes we encounter obstacles while trying to reach people, it can be resources, incident, situation and even people. People as obstacle can be a challenging one. They include those that do not understand your intention, those that understand but do not believe in your capability, or those that themselves have intention otherwise. What if these people made more people think the way they do? This doesn’t only make your task more difficult, but also question your worth of doing all you are doing.
Indeed, people who care much about other’s business often get effected by them. There are saying that we as individual, should mind our own business. We maybe happier, living in our own dreamland. When outside world try to reach us again, like how works like charity can affect needy people, like how everything we do affect the world and every people, we start to become enlighten once again, and want to do everything to interfere. When we did something wrong, that have possibly affected others negatively, our own-business conscious activates again and we fall back into our dreamland. We have been thought since young to mind our own business and every now and then we see contradicting idea from those who had been teach us the opposite.
Who in this world has the unbreakable value of service to other? History has proved many great people who place other on top of themselves. Most of them are great leaders. This is perhaps because these people have properly lead themselves, they can effectively mind their own business, make their service mindset to people firm. We should say that, great values makes great leadership, that leadership first lead ourselves, only then we can talk about leadership to others, and finally service to people.
