Today, when we say hacker, we mean people who break into other’s system and shamelessly put up lines like “hAcKeD bY WaReZgEnIuS!”. These people are not hacker, they are simply Crackers. It is unfortunate that even the media ignorantly named these crackers as Hackers, which upset many real hackers out in the community. Check out How to be a Hacker by Eric S. Raymond. I am no hacker, far from it, but the values upholding the hacker community is definitely worth knowing.
