Free Software, Free Society: Selected Essays of Richard M. Stallman
by Richard M. Stallman, Lawrence Lessig, and Joshua Gay
I seriously recommend everyone, especially those with interest in software development and liberal politics, to read this book. Free Software, Free Society is a compilation of the best essays and speeches of Richard Stallman, founder of the Free Software Foundation and GNU Project.
The book is divided into 4 main section — Section One, Two, Three and Four. Section One — The GNU Project and Free Software — gives an overview of how GNU Project comes about, an introduction to free software. Section Two — Copyright, Copyleft, and Patents - discuss the purpose of copyright laws, problems cause by it’s exploitability and how copyleft work. The section also covers patent laws — software patent and it’s proposed harm on the society. Section Three — Freedom, Society, and Software — bring on the ethical, practical and political argument for free software — it’s benefits to the society. Section Four contains the GNU General Public License (v2), GNU Lesser General Public License (v2.1) and GNU Free Documentation License (v1.1).
Conservatives Warning: This book may contain radical ideas.
